Once is a clarification. Twice is suspicious.
THE STORY
March 25, 1983.
At Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever, Michael Jackson reunited onstage with his brothers.
Jermaine was there too.
That detail mattered because when the Jackson brothers left Motown in 1975, Jermaine stayed behind with the label while the others moved on.
So when Michael spoke about sharing magical moments with all of his brothers, he added a tiny clarification:
“…including Jermaine.”
Okay, Mike.
Thank you for the clarification.
Jermaine is officially included.
WE COULD HAVE LEFT IT THERE
And, honestly, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.
Given the brothers’ professional history, Michael may simply have wanted to make clear that he meant all of them — Jermaine included.
Nothing strange about that.
Perfectly innocent.
Case closed.
Except…
HE DID IT AGAIN
February 28, 1984.
Almost a year later.
Different stage.
Different event.
At the Grammy Awards, Michael thanked his brothers.
And once again:
“…including Jermaine.”
Again.
Almost a year later.
Other stage. Other context.
Same apparently necessary clarification.
Once is a clarification. Twice is suspicious.
Mike.
SO… WHAT DID HE MEAN?
We don’t actually know.
There is no documented explanation from Michael saying that the phrase was meant as shade, a joke or some secret message aimed at Jermaine.
It could simply have been affection.
It could have been a reference to their professional history.
It could have been Michael being Michael.
And that is exactly where the fun begins.
The fact is real.
The interpretation belongs to the people watching.
You can decide for yourself.
YOU HAD TO BE THERE
This is one of those tiny Michael moments that means almost nothing if you don’t know the context.
Two words.
That’s it.
But once you know the history — and once you realize he said it twice — the phrase changes completely.
